China - Chongqing forest planting to begin in 2008

Project bulletinsThursday, 6 March 2008
Trial plantings of tree seedlings are scheduled to begin over 660 hectares in October-November in a reforestation and sustainable harvesting project in Chongqing in central China.

Small trial plantings on site by the Tongnan county governmentThis follows the signing of contracts for a joint project between the Tongnan Forest Bureau, local landowners and Carbon Positive’s local China operation, Sunshine Technology. Sunshine Technology will plant, maintain and sustainably harvest fast-growing eucalyptus species. Ownership of the trees will be shared with local landowners. The trial plantings will be designed to test species of varying provenance sourced from local nurseries for suitability to conditions at the project sites. Our foresters will especially be looking for snow and frost tolerance in trial seedlings selected. The venture will see 27,600 hectares (415,000 mu) of deforested land planted overall up to 2014. As part of the project operations, Sunshine Technology will establish a local processing facility, an administrative office in Chongqing city and a field office in Tongnan County, all staffed in part by local workers.

The signing of the MOU for the project,September 2007The project aims to create a profitable and sustainable timber production operation with environmental benefits from reforestation and possible carbon credits. Timber products will be sold to the local market and contribute to the replacement of imported Asian timber, often illegally harvested, amid rapidly growing demand for wood in China.
